Mrs. Peterson's Science--Buzzzzing with STEM

Introduction to botany allowed students to learn about plant anatomy through class discussion and interactive labs.  Students discovered the vital role pollinators play in our ability to obtain food. Using bees as our main pollinator, students used mathematical conversions to calculate facts about bees and their buzzing life.

*Wings beat 200 times per second--how many beats per minute?

*Bees fly up to 15 mph.  How many minutes to travel one mile?

*Beehives can produce 5 gallons of honey; convert this to quarts.

What is ISTEM?

ISTEM stands for Idaho Science Technology Engineering and Math.   "i-STEM is a coordinated state-wide effort by the State Department of Education, Idaho Professional-Technical Education, educators, businesses, and industry to support science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade" (

So what is Bear Lake Middle School doing to help promote this effort?  If you visit the math and science classrooms you will see a wide variety of activities that incorporate the STEM philosophy.  Currently in 8th grade science students are working on a physics unit which brings to life the engineering of roller coasters while applying the science and mathematical concepts of force, push, and the calculating of many mathematical equations.

Math students are learning how the science of flight mixes with the calculations of math as they create their own rockets and figure out rates of change.

These are just a few of the ways that students are moving towards a future that holds endless possibilities.
